How hormones can save your marriage: the link between love & libido

Mood swings, low libido, and irritability could be signs of a hormone imbalance affecting your marriage. Joi + Blokes co-founder, Katy Whalen shares how balancing hormones transformed her marriage, and explains how it can improve your patience and boost intimacy in your relationships too.

My husband, Josh was the first to discover hormone therapy, while he was struggling with his health. He was overweight and constantly tired, and our sex drive was virtually non-existent. We both suffered with low libido and low self-esteem and it all began to take a toll on our marriage.

I’d also had a traumatic journey to motherhood, and really struggled with my physical and mental health. But then I made the decision to finally prioritize myself – to take care of my body so I had the energy to care for the babies I had wanted so badly. It wasn’t an overnight fix. Hormones were a game changer, but it took time – around nine months to a year of truly dialing things in. I remember feeling this great big sigh of relief in my body when I found the right balance with progesterone. And testosterone had a big impact on my energy, mood and overall well being. It was a process – trial and error, learning and adjusting – but eventually I felt not just good, but genuinely strong and stable, and feeling like myself again.

Marriage problems or hormone imbalance? Here’s how to tell

This is why when couples question whether their relationship struggles stem from hormones or simply because they are falling out of love, we always recommend that they take a hormone blood test before making any major decisions like marriage counseling. Balancing your hormones might be the solution you need.

Josh and I are testament to that. Our sex life has never been better. Josh has lost 50 pounds, my energy levels are through the roof, I love to work out. And as Josh always says, he wakes up with morning erections all the time now.

Why balanced hormones are key to a healthy marriage

Falling in love quite literally requires chemistry, and during the process of bonding with your partner, your brain releases hormones that cause you to feel everything from that initial attraction to happiness, joy, lust and contentment.

Oxytocin, often called the ‘love hormone’, surges during physical touch – hugging, kissing and sex – deepening trust, intimacy and emotional security in a relationship.

However, testosterone and estrogen play the biggest roles in sexual desire and physical attraction. These essential sex hormones help sustain passion, strengthen emotions and keep relationships healthy and thriving.  When these hormone levels are imbalanced, libido, mood and overall connection can suffer – impacting both your love life and long-term relationship.

How hormone imbalance affects sex drive, mood and relationships

Testosterone may be known as the primary male hormone, but it plays a crucial role in both men and women – especially when it comes to sex drive. When testosterone levels are low, it doesn’t just impact libido; it also affects mood, sleep and energy levels, all of which can disrupt quality of life and relationships.

No one understands that better than Tara, a long time Joi + Blokes customer, who, along with her partner, started testosterone therapy to address symptoms like insomnia and a diminished sex drive. “It completely changed my mood, sleep quality and overall health,” she shares. “Our quality of life both physically and mentally started to improve drastically – better sleep, better sex drive, more energy, weight loss and mental clarity.”

Estrogen, the primary female hormone, is essential not just for ovulation and menstruation, but also for maintaining a healthy sex drive and positive mood. When estrogen levels fluctuate – especially during perimenopause and menopause – women often experience physical and emotional symptoms, including irregular bleeding, weight gain, vaginal dryness, incontinence, hot flashes, night sweats, depression and anxiety.

Kara, another Joi + Blokes customer, began taking a combination of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone after feeling “terrible” and “bristled” when her husband touched her. “I so desperately wanted to feel better and connect with my husband,” she admits.

The transformation was swift and the impatience Kara had with her husband disappeared. “I had more energy and desire and my body responded to him without hesitation,” she recalls. “We are closer. I am nicer. I am happier and more confident in my marriage.”

Progesterone also plays a powerful role in relationships, influencing sleep, mood and libido. When out of balance, it can leave you exhausted, irritable and disconnected – none of which are ideal for a happy relationship and healthy sex life.

Women experiencing symptoms of menopause and perimenopause may also find that hormone therapy can help restore connection and intimacy in their relationships. “If you’re in perimenopause right now or full menopause and you are not getting hormone replacement therapy, my guess is you’re struggling in your marriage,” explains Meredith Masony, who credits balancing her hormones with saving her relationship.

“I struggled for years in my marriage because my hormones were imbalanced and I couldn’t get a physician to order a hormone panel,” she adds. After starting hormone therapy with Joi + Blokes, Meredith says she has never felt better. “I’m a better mom, I’m a better wife, I’m a better person.”
